A Distortion+ manufactured around 1980!
At the time, this was a groundbreaking MXR product — genuinely compact yet rugged die-cast housing, dramatically improved battery life. With just Drive and Level controls, it works well with any amp or guitar type, and its easy access to picking nuance made it more popular with fusion musicians than rock musicians at the time. Rolling back the guitar's volume produces a warm, edgy distortion. Its slightly rough, dry-textured distortion is characteristic of 1970s hard rock tone — reportedly the sound Randy Rhoads himself was after. The exterior also differs from earlier and current models, with a rougher-textured case surface. Compared to the current model, the low end is more emphasized, giving this era's units a characteristic warmth. It also responds well to the guitar's volume knob, letting you vary the amount of drive much like playing straight into the amp.
