Altec 1592b Preamp/Mixer w/Direct Out

Very rare and high quality mod of a classic vintage mixer, 4 of the 5 inputs have custom transformer balanced direct outs. All inputs have plug-in transformers in place and sound great. All knobs and switches work, some pots are a little scratchy while turning but contact well. One of the direct outs currently not working, not sure it’s an easy fix.

The combinations possible of transformers and pure analog vibe are endless. These older units have no ICs and all big fat point-to-point wiring. The mod uses the speech/music switches to switch between sending inputs to direct out or the mix bus so you have 4 lovely vibey vintage preamps, a 5x1 mixer or any combination of the 2 at the same time. Huge versatility in the rack.

Couple of great uses:

- 4 preamps that can all be used at the same time independently, 5 if the other direct out is fixed. The 5th goes through he large main output transformer. Or blend them all together through the main output transformer.

- Run bass (or any other sound) through it to break up the muddy frequencies and add those sweet upper harmonics.

- Parallel process and run one side through this to add harmonics and character. You can drive way beyond peak and it just keeps breaking up in that crunchy pleasing analog way so blending a bit of that back into a clean signal is wonderful.

These very rarely become available. I’m only selling it because I bought 8 console channels and built a mix bus for them, so I can achieve a lot of the same things so haven’t had room for both.
