A rare and highly distinctive 1935 Gibson L-C Century of Progress, one of Gibson's most sought-after pre-war flat-top models.
Introduced in 1933 as Gibson's showcase model for the Chicago Century of Progress World's Fair, the L-C was based around the L-00 design but featured a number of significant upgrades and distinctive decorative appointments.
This example features a solid Sitka spruce top with highly figured maple back and sides, a mahogany neck, and the unmistakable fully pearloid fingerboard and headstock with pearl diamond details. The original tiger-stripe pickguard and original open-gear tuners are present.
The guitar retains its original finish, with plenty of genuine playing wear, finish checking and age-related marks consistent with an instrument of this age. It has not been refinished.
The guitar has undergone appropriate restoration work during its lifetime.
It has had a professional neck reset, bringing the neck geometry and playability back into good working order. During the previous restoration, a heel crack was repaired. Two smaller finger braces on the underside of the top have also been reglued.
It retains a high degree of originality, including the original finish, original open-gear tuners and original tiger-stripe pickguard.
There is plenty of honest cosmetic wear, checking, scratches and marks accumulated over its long life. Please study all photographs carefully, as these form an important part of the description.
The guitar is approximately 90 years old and naturally shows considerable age-related cosmetic wear, but the important structural and playability work has already been completed.
Sold with hard case.
