NEUMANN Cardioid Microphone KM-184 Stereo Set, Nickel Color. Belonging to the compact series of microphones "180 Series", the range is composed of three miniature microphones, with different directives, which cover the most common demands in both studio and live applications. It is the successor of the famous Neumann KM 84, used since the 70s, with great success in many applications.
Due to its optimized mechanical construction, and the obvious suppression of the "modular" feature, which is not necessary in many cases, this series fits perfectly in the tightest budgets and also within the "Home Recording".
Acoustic characteristics Neumann KM-184 microphone:
The Neumann KM 184 has a cardioid directional feature. This pressure gradient transducer has a very soft frequency response, not only on the 0º axis, but also for the incident sound from the sides (outside the axis). Due to this characteristic, there is usually no sound coloring for shots made covering wide angles. Although the KM 184 has the same capsule as the Neumann KM 84, the microphone differs slightly in the response in frequency at 0º: the Neumann KM 184 has a slight enhancement at 9 kHz, a feature that was already successfully introduced in the KM 140.
The result is a fresher and more vivid tonal balance than the Neumann KM 84, which has a completely flat response. This difference has been achieved with only a small change in the rear opening of the capsule, so it is not due to any type of resonance.
Neumann KM-184 Microphone Electronics:
Electrically, it has the same circuitry without transformer as the Neumann KM 100 modular series, which gives us excellent technical specifications. Compared to the Neumann KM 84, the dynamic range of the Neumann KM 184 has increased by 24 dB, mainly due to the reduction of the microphone's own noise to only 22 dB (CCIR) and the increase in the maximum pressure that the microphone can handle to 138 dB. The microphone works without any problem, even with equipment that does not have a balanced input, such as certain DAT recorders.
It is available in black or nickel and is served in a box with a windbreak and two clamps, one to hook to the microphone body and the other to the XLR connector.
