Steinberger GM1T – Newburgh Era – HeadlessUSA Rebuild – Serial N8742

Found in a banjo shop in Nashville. Of all the places for a Steinberger to end up, that’s a good one.

A Newburgh-era GM1T in its original matte black finish, with a few small marks earned along the way. Clean, fast neck. Low, steady action. And the thing that matters most on a guitar like this: the TransTrem works flawlessly.

That’s backed by a proper HeadlessUSA rebuild and setup, including replacement tremolo springs and bearings. It locks, transposes and returns to pitch with the precision that made the design worth pursuing in the first place.

A different way of thinking

Ned Steinberger came to instruments through sculpture and industrial design. He approached the guitar with a willingness to question things other builders took for granted: the headstock, the materials, the balance, the mechanics.

Steinberger moved production to Newburgh, New York, in 1983. The following year brought the TransTrem, a remarkable mechanism designed to preserve the pitch relationships between strings as you move the arm, and lock the guitar into transposed tunings. Whole chords could move together. It gave players something genuinely different to work with.

This GM1T comes from that Newburgh chapter. Decades later, it still feels like an idea the rest of the room is catching up with.

The work on this example

When I found it, someone had fitted a passive pickup. Their reasons remain their own. It went to HeadlessUSA, specialists in vintage Steinberger restoration, for a comprehensive rebuild:

  • Stainless steel refret with super-jumbo frets
  • Full point-to-point rewire
  • EMG 89 with push-pull switching
  • Fresh 25k active pot
  • Proper TransTrem setup
  • Replacement TransTrem springs and bearings
  • New string retainer band
  • TT-calibrated D’Addario ESXL120 double-ball strings
  • New 9V battery

The result is a vintage Steinberger with its essential machinery working exactly as it should. The bridge feels tight and precise, the neck is effortless, and the original matte black finish retains its few honest signs of use.

Kept in a smoke-free, pet-free environment.

An extraordinary piece of guitar design, given the specialist attention it deserves. Ready to get back to work.
