The Roland JD-XA is a unique analog/digital crossover synthesizer that represents a major milestone for Roland: it was their first polyphonic analog synthesizer since 1986. Combining a 4-voice pure analog engine with a massive 64-voice digital engine, it is designed to operate either independently or interactively, allowing you to route digital waveforms directly through true analog hardware filters.

Dual Sound Engines & Architecture

The core philosophy of the JD-XA is its hybrid structure, giving you 8 separate parts to layer and split:

  • The Analog Section (Parts 1–4):
    • Voices: 4 discrete analog voices (can be used as 4 monophonic parts or stacked into a 4-voice polyphonic synth).
    • Oscillators: 2 DCOs per voice featuring Saw, Square, Pulse (with PWM), Triangle, and Sine waves. Supports cross-modulation, ring modulation, and oscillator sync.
    • Envelopes & LFOs: 4 ultra-fast envelopes (Pitch, Filter, Amp) and 2 multi-waveform LFOs per voice.
  • The Digital Section (Parts 5–8):
    • Voices / Engine: 64-voice polyphony running Roland’s acclaimed SuperNATURAL synth engine.
    • Sounds: Features high-quality PCM acoustic, electric, and virtual analog tones. It is completely compatible with Roland Integra-7 sound libraries, and patches can be loaded via the Roland Axial Website.

2. Signal Routing & The "Crossover"The synth's primary superpower is its interactive routing. You can use the engines completely separately, but you can also:

  • Route a SuperNATURAL digital part directly into the analog filter section to warm up or heavily distort digital textures.
  • Use the digital engine as a complex modulation source for the analog cross-modulation circuit.
  • Send the pure analog engine out of its own hardware output port (Analog Dry Out) to external effects or processing gear while the digital parts run through the main outputs.

3. Filter SectionThe JD-XA features an incredibly flexible, all-analog filter circuit with dedicated Drive controls to add grit and saturation:

  • Filter 1: A smooth, classic 4-pole transistor-ladder low-pass filter (similar to vintage Moog/Roland synths).
  • Filter 2: A brighter, distinctively aggressive multi-mode filter (LPF/BPF/HPF).
  • High-Pass Filter: A dedicated, non-resonant high-pass filter is constantly available on tap to clean up low-end mud.

4. Step Sequencer & Arpeggiator

  • 16-Track Pattern Sequencer: 8 internal tracks are allocated to the internal engines, and 8 external tracks are dedicated to controlling external gear via MIDI or CV/Gate.
  • Motion Recording: You can record real-time knob turns and slider movements directly into the sequence blocks to create evolving textures.
  • Arpeggiator: Fully programmable onboard arpeggiator that can run in tandem with sequences.

5. Multi-Effects EngineThe JD-XA includes massive, multi-layered digital processing:

  • Per-Part MFX: Every single one of the 8 parts has its own independent multi-effects processor (69 types available) and dedicated EQ.
  • Global TFX: 2 Master Total Effects processors for the entire program.
  • Master Reverb & Delay: Global blocks to wash out or space your final mix.

6. Hardware & Form Factor

  • Keybed: 49 velocity-sensitive keys with channel aftertouch.
  • Interface: Highly visual layout with glowing red back-lit sliders and knobs. It sports Roland's classic combined pitch/mod stick alongside two traditional assignable mod wheels.
  • Chassis: Lightweight plastic-and-metal frame weighing just 6.5 kg (14.3 lbs), making it highly portable for gigging.
