TEAC X-2000R BL — SERVICED — BLACK FINISH — BIDIRECTIONAL RECORD/PLAY

Offered here is an exceptionally attractive example of TEAC's celebrated X-2000R BL, the black-finish version of one of the company's most sophisticated consumer open-reel machines.

This particular deck was professionally serviced by Rainbow Electronics in Sacramento, California on September 4, 2025. Service included installation of a new capstan belt, lubrication, pinch-roller restoration, and comprehensive testing of record and playback operation.

The machine is operating properly and presents beautifully.

SERVICE / CONDITION

Professional service performed by Rainbow Electronics, Sacramento, CA, 9/4/2025:

  • New capstan belt
  • Mechanical lubrication
  • Pinch roller restored
  • Record and playback functions fully tested

The tape path and heads present extremely well, as shown in the detailed photographs.

Cosmetically, this is an excellent example. The black faceplate, controls, trim and cabinet all retain a remarkably clean appearance. There is a small area of cosmetic scuffing along the front edge of the outer case, shown clearly in the photographs. The screws securing the outer case are not factory-original, but are a neat, matching replacement set. Neither issue detracts significantly from what is otherwise an unusually handsome X-2000R BL.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.

ABOUT THE TEAC X-2000R BL

Introduced during the final great generation of TEAC open-reel machines, the X-2000R was an extremely sophisticated home recorder. Unlike the standard X-2000, the R version provides bidirectional recording and playback, using six heads to provide three-head functionality in both directions. TEAC equipped the machine with cobalt-amorphous record/playback heads and a three-motor transport.

The transport employs TEAC's closed-loop dual-capstan system with tension-servo control, designed for stable tape handling and reduced modulation noise. Other features include dbx Type I noise reduction, EE tape capability, fine bias adjustment, pitch control, auto-search and repeat functions, real-time electronic counter, timer operation, record mute/auto spacer and full-logic transport controls.

The X-2000R BL accommodates both 7-inch and 10½-inch reels and operates at 3¾ and 7½ ips. Contemporary specifications quote frequency response at 7½ ips of approximately 40 Hz–33 kHz ±3 dB, with signal-to-noise performance reaching 100 dB with dbx engaged.

The X-2000R represents very nearly the end point of TEAC's development of the sophisticated consumer open-reel recorder: auto-reverse, six heads, dual capstans, servo-controlled tape handling, dbx and remarkably wide-band recording performance, all packaged in one of TEAC's most distinctive late-generation designs. The black BL version is particularly striking, and this professionally serviced example is ready to become the centerpiece of a serious analog system.
