Rare original Paiste Sound Creation 20" Mellow Ride with four rivets, made in Switzerland.

This is from Paiste's original vintage Sound Creation series, not the later Signature Mellow Ride. It has the distinctive nearly-flat profile with a very small bell and a wonderfully controlled, complex sound.

Sound

This is a very distinctive ride with a dark, mellow and complex character. It has clear stick definition over a controlled wash, while the four rivets add a beautiful shimmering sizzle without overwhelming the cymbal.

To my ear, it has exactly the kind of atmospheric, sophisticated jazz sound associated with classic ECM recordings. The nearly-flat profile keeps the wash controlled, while the small bell gives it a little more body and versatility than a true flat ride.

I've owned this cymbal since the mid-1990s and have always considered it a particularly beautiful-sounding jazz ride.
