The Soundgear series has long demonstrated Ibanez’s ability to create basses that combine modern design, exceptional comfort, versatility and remarkable affordability. A true reference in the bass world, the range has evolved considerably over the years without ever losing its greatest strengths: outstanding ergonomics and a design conceived above all with the musician in mind. The SR500N-MAM is a perfect illustration of this philosophy and is arguably one of the most appealing instruments in its class.
From the very first moment you pick it up, you immediately recognize everything that has made the SR platform so successful: an extremely comfortable body, beautifully sculpted contours and a slim, fast-playing neck that makes everything feel effortless, whether you are playing solid bass lines or more technical parts. The combination of an okoume body and a 5-piece roasted maple and walnut neck gives the instrument an excellent sense of solidity and a very responsive acoustic character, while the rosewood fingerboard provides a smooth yet precise playing feel.
What is particularly impressive at this price point, however, is the level of equipment. Ibanez has chosen to equip the SR500N with two excellent passive Nordstrand Big Break pickups, highly regarded for their dynamics, power and clarity. They deliver a much more distinctive and authoritative sound than one might expect from a bass in this price range, with solid lows, articulate mids and beautifully defined highs. Their design also helps maintain an exceptionally clean and quiet signal, even when using more aggressive EQ settings.
The Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band system further enhances this versatility. The active EQ allows you to shape the sound efficiently according to the musical context, while the EQ bypass provides genuine passive operation as well. The mid-frequency selector adds another valuable level of tonal customization, allowing you to quickly adapt the bass response to different playing styles and amplification setups.
The adjustable MR5S bridge, 24 medium frets, standard 34-inch scale and 19 mm string spacing all contribute to the impression of an extremely complete instrument. Nothing important appears to have been compromised, and there is a remarkable sense of coherence between the ergonomics, craftsmanship and electronics.
Ultimately, it is the exceptional value for money that is probably the SR500N-MAM’s strongest selling point. At a still very reasonable price, Ibanez offers a bass featuring Nordstrand pickups, active/passive 3-band electronics, a 5-piece roasted maple and walnut neck and an adjustable bridge, all combined with the legendary comfort of the SR platform. It is genuinely unusual to find so many high-end features brought together in a bass in this price category.
The SR500N-MAM is therefore much more than simply a “well-equipped” bass: it is a modern, serious and highly versatile instrument capable of competing with significantly more expensive models. An excellent gateway into higher-level equipment, but also a highly relevant choice for experienced players looking for an efficient, comfortable instrument with a genuine tonal personality.
