1. The Leadpipe "H" (Heavy Wall / High Backpressure Taper)

• Heavy Gauge Material: The leadpipe is drawn from a thicker-walled brass or nickel-silver alloy. A heavier leadpipe alters how the instrument vibrates right where the air enters, dampening minor surface vibrations to give the player a incredibly stable, centered "core" to the sound.
• Taper Architecture: In French brass manufacturing shorthand, "H" also designated a specific internal venture/taper geometry designed to add slightly more resistance (high resistance). This helps the upper register "slot" securely and prevents the note from bending or cracking when pushed to loud volumes.

2. The Slide "H" (Heavy Sleeves / Heavy Bracing)

• Reinforced Tubing: Seeing the "H" on the main tuning slide, first slide, or third slide denotes that the outer slide tubes feature heavy-duty sleeve reinforcement.
• Targeted Mass: Instead of weighting down the entire instrument evenly, Courtois engineers specifically placed extra mass on the slides. This targeted weight effectively absorbs excess high-frequency overtones. The result is the signature ultra-dark, velvety tone that Courtois trumpets are famous for.

The Performance ResultHaving the "H" configurations on both the slides and the leadpipe means your horn is built for maximum symphonic projection. It will require a bit more air support to "light up" compared to a standard lightweight commercial horn, but it will reward you with a massive, warm sound that never breaks up or gets brittle at fortissimo levels.
