Here we have a near MINT 2021 Gibson Custom Shop 1935 J-35 reissue acoustic. With frets like new, this 5 year old guitar would be mint with the exception of a few very small flaws. On the tips of the headstock there are 2 very small nicks if you look closely at the pictures. The other 2 flaws are very small and hard to notice. One on the top of the body at the binding and a small scratch on the side just below that and I have shown a picture of both. Other than that you are buying a mint Gibson J-35.

This guitar being well cared for and stored in it's case, I only had to lightly clean and season the rosewood fretboard and install a fresh set of Ernie Ball .12-.54 strings bronze wound strings. The open back tuners tuned her right up. The guitar plays and sounds amazing! Check out the video.

The story and idea behind the Gibson 1936 custom Shop reissue J-35 acoustic.

The Gibson Custom Shop 1936 J-35 Reissue is a precise structural and historical tribute to one of the most significant, blue-collar acoustic guitars ever made. Born as a direct response to the Great Depression, the J-35 became an indispensable pre-war tool for working musicians. The modern Gibson Acoustic Custom Shop team in Bozeman, Montana, resurrected this exact 1936 formula to give players the dry, powerful punch of a multi-thousand-dollar vintage original without the structural fragility.

The Original 1936 Story: A Depression-Era Workhorse:

In 1934, Gibson introduced its first 16-inch, round-shoulder dreadnought, simply called the "Jumbo". It was a fantastic guitar built to compete with Martin's burgeoning dreadnought line, but priced at $60 (a massive sum during the Depression), it didn't sell well. By late 1936, Gibson scrapped the original Jumbo and completely reimagined their strategy. They pared down cosmetic frills, streamlined production, and released a stripped-back version priced at exactly $35.00—hence the name, J-35. It was highly accessible, exceptionally loud, and stayed in production until 1942, when it was succeeded by the iconic J-45.

The Custom Shop Idea:

Recreating "Old Wood" Vintage 1930s J-35s are legendary for a specific sonic trait: they are incredibly lightweight, dry, and exploding with woody projection. The core philosophy behind the Custom Shop Historic Reissue was to bypass standard modern manufacturing shortcuts and recreate the exact physical blueprint that made those pre-war guitars magic. Rather than just making a guitar that looks old, Gibson engineered it to behave like old wood using key historic specifications:

• Thermally Aged Adirondack Red Spruce Top: The top and braces are baked (torrefied) in an oxygen-free oven. This crystallizes the resins in the wood, mimicking the cell structure of spruce that has been naturally aging and drying out for 90 years.
• Hot Hide Glue Construction: Standard acoustic guitars are built using synthetic aliphatic resin glues. The 1936 reissue uses traditional animal hide glue. When hide glue cures, it creates a glass-like, structural bond that allows sonic vibrations to pass seamlessly from the top to the bracing without damping the sound.
• Advanced X-Bracing: The guitar utilizes wide, hand-scalloped red spruce X-bracing pushed closer to the sound hole. This leaves a larger unbraced area on the lower bout, letting the top act like a loose drum head to give the guitar massive bass response and "pop".
• Ultra-Thin VOS Finish: The guitar features only a few coats of thin nitrocellulose lacquer. This allows the wood to breathe and vibrate freely, so you can actually feel the texture of the grain.
