Sony C37a Tube Microphone

I’m downsizing and selling off some of my vintage pro audio equipment. This Sony C37a tube condenser mic has served me well for over 20 years. I had two for a while as well as a pair of C38b’s. These Sony large diaphragm condensers are among my favorite mics. This is my last one. I believe it’s an early model as the power supply (before being rebuilt) had a 1959 date stamp.

In 2006 the capsule was re-diaphragmed by John Peluso.

In 2021 the power supply was completely rebuilt with new transformer by a pro tech.

This mic is performing beautifully and sounds wonderful. The original cables and connectors are in very good shape as is the original carrying case.

As is the case with all of these mics, the rubber grommet in the yoke assembly had deteriorated with age had has been repaired with rubber o-rings. It is now firm and stable. The wing nuts are replacements as the original tightening nuts would be round. The grill has some dents but is firm and solid.

Also included are schematics and several spare 6AU6 tubes so you can select the one you like best.

When I obtained this mic, the grey pill housing had several vertical cracks in the metal and would splay open like a tulip. Not sure how this happened. Perhaps this could be repaired but I’ve always had a zip tie holding it together. It doesn’t affect performance.

This mic is old and funky but has been well maintained and sounds wonderful on vocals, acoustic instruments, toms, overheads, etc. If you’ve ever used one you know that these are exceptional microphones.
