PASSIVE CARDIOID RIBBON


The Dynacord DD 270 is an unusual German studio ribbon microphone from the 1960s, described in contemporary Dynacord documentation as a “Dynamisches Bändchen-Mikrofon in Studio-Qualität” — a dynamic ribbon microphone of studio quality.

The DD 270 appears to share its underlying design with the Mikrofonbau MB 301. Direct comparison shows the same distinctive construction, dimensions and weight, strongly suggesting a common manufacturing origin.

The DD 270 is a substantial professional ribbon microphone built around an unusually sophisticated cardioid ribbon system. an enormous ribbon head and protective grille, creating proportions unlike most conventional microphones of the period.

This microphone has a new ribbon installed in its original motor by Dieter Schopf, the microphone designer and builder behind DS Audio Service that specialises in ribbon-microphone engineering and the preservation and restoration of classic microphone designs.

Importantly, the original DD 270 motor has been retained. The work restores the ribbon transducer while preserving the original motor and acoustic architecture of the microphone.



RIBBON & MOTOR DESIGN

At the center of the DD 270 is a passive ribbon transducer surrounded by a remarkably substantial magnetic and acoustic structure.

Rather than treating the ribbon as an isolated element, the microphone is constructed as a complete acoustic system. The ribbon, motor, rear acoustic path, grille and surrounding mechanical structure all contribute to its behavior.

This is particularly important because of the microphone's cardioid characteristic.

A conventional pressure-gradient ribbon allows sound to reach both sides of the ribbon freely, naturally producing a figure-eight response. Creating a cardioid ribbon requires considerably more acoustic engineering.

The sound reaching the rear of the ribbon must be controlled in level and phase, creating the pressure relationship required to reduce rear pickup while maintaining sensitivity from the front.

In this example, the historically important original motor remains in place, while Dieter Schopf has installed a new ribbon into that original assembly.

The microphone therefore retains the fundamental motor and acoustic construction around which the DD 270 was originally engineered.



THE CARDIOID RIBBON SYSTEM

The cardioid directional characteristic is one of the defining technical features of the DD 270.

Rather than leaving both sides of the ribbon equally exposed, the rear acoustic path is controlled. This allows the microphone to retain the fundamental qualities of a ribbon transducer while substantially reducing pickup from behind.

For practical recording, this is significant.

Traditional figure-eight ribbons inherently capture considerable sound from the rear. The DD 270 instead provides greater control over reflections, other instruments and unwanted acoustic information arriving from behind the microphone.

It therefore combines two qualities that were relatively unusual together: the mechanical behavior of a ribbon transducer and the practical directionality of a cardioid studio microphone.



BUILD & DESIGN

The DD 270 is an exceptionally substantial microphone.

Its construction is almost entirely metal, and it feels surprisingly heavy and dense when held in the hand.

The narrow cylindrical lower section provides the structural base, connector and identification area. Above it sits the much broader ribbon assembly and protective grille, with the substantial magnetic motor contributing considerably to the microphone's mass.

There is very little about the DD 270 that appears decorative.

The head is large because the ribbon and acoustic system require space. The broad grille protects an extremely delicate transducer without acoustically enclosing it. The considerable weight reflects the substantial internal motor construction.

The result feels less like a lightweight microphone and more like a compact piece of precision studio hardware.

Its industrial appearance is characteristic of professional German audio equipment of the period: straightforward, robust and heavily dictated by engineering requirements.



GRILLE & ACOUSTIC CONSTRUCTION

The enormous head is perhaps the most recognisable outer feature of the DD 270.

Compared with the narrow cylindrical lower body, the grille appears almost oversized. Its proportions, however, are functional.

A ribbon element is extremely light and mechanically delicate. The broad metal grille provides substantial physical protection and distance around the transducer while maintaining a large acoustically open surface.

More importantly, in a directional ribbon microphone, the space surrounding the transducer forms part of the acoustic system itself.

The grille therefore should not be considered simply a protective cover placed around an otherwise complete motor.

Its dimensions and relationship with the ribbon, motor and rear acoustic path form part of the microphone's overall architecture.

Once the construction underneath is understood, the unusual proportions of the DD 270 begin to make considerable sense.



SOUND CHARACTER

The DD 270 should not be approached simply with the expectation of a stereotypically dark vintage-ribbon sound.

Its engineering concept is considerably more ambitious.

The ribbon provides the smooth mechanical behavior associated with this type of transducer, while the cardioid acoustic system changes the microphone's interaction with its surroundings.

Reduced rear pickup changes the balance between direct sound and room sound compared with a conventional figure-eight ribbon. This can provide considerably greater control when recording in reflective spaces or around other instruments.

The DD 270 is therefore particularly interesting on vocals, acoustic instruments, amplifiers and other sources where the qualities of a ribbon transducer are desirable without the unrestricted rear pickup of a conventional ribbon microphone.

The condition of the ribbon is particularly important in any historical ribbon microphone. In this example, that uncertainty has been addressed directly: the original motor has been retained and fitted with a new ribbon by Dieter Schopf.

The individual microphone can therefore be evaluated on its present measured and audible performance rather than relying solely on historical specifications.


HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The DD 270 belongs to a fascinating period of German microphone engineering.

Dynacord presented it as a studio-quality ribbon microphone, placing it firmly within the company's professional microphone offering rather than as a general-purpose consumer model.

Its cardioid ribbon principle is particularly notable.

While ribbon microphones were already well established, the natural figure-eight behavior of the transducer meant that producing a cardioid ribbon required a considerably more elaborate acoustic construction.

The DD 270 represents precisely this approach: taking the ribbon principle and incorporatingating it into a more controlled, directional professional microphone.

Today, the DD 270 is rarely encountered, and relatively little information about the model has survived compared with better-known German studio microphones of the same period.


A DISTINCTIVE GERMAN RIBBON DESIGN

The significance of the Dynacord DD 270 lies in the complete design.

It combines a passive ribbon transducer, substantial original motor, controlled rear acoustic loading, cardioid directivity, an unusually large protective grille and exceptionally robust all-metal construction.

These elements work together as a carefully integrated mechanical and acoustic system.

In this particular example, the preservation of the original motor combined with a professionally installed new ribbon by Dieter Schopf is especially useful . The component that defines much of the original microphone architecture remains intact, while its most delicate and condition-dependent element has been renewed.

More than half a century later, the DD 270's extraordinary weight, oversized head and uncompromising construction still communicate its engineering objective immediately.

The Dynacord DD 270 remains a rare and fascinating example of 1960s German ribbon-microphone engineering — robust, technically ambitious and unmistakably designed around the requirements of the ribbon itself.
