Martin 1967 D-18

A commanding presence built over more than half a century of being played by countless musicians. The absolute standard among acoustic guitars, the instrument behind the sound of so many classic records: a 1967 Martin D-18 has arrived.

The late 1960s were a transitional period at Martin marked by scattered spec changes, but also the tail end of a golden era when today's impossible-to-source woods were used without hesitation. This example concentrates everything that makes a vintage Martin special, and we recommend it with full confidence as specialists.

The body top has aged into a deep amber over the decades, with fine, beautiful weather-checking typical of a genuine vintage instrument.

The sides and back use dense, superb mahogany that far surpasses anything available in quality timber today. Mahogany is often described as "warm" or "midrange-focused," but this particular example has a firm, hard-edged attack and clearly defined outline.

1967 falls in the final period when the T-bar neck rod was used, and this guitar retains that T-bar rod, a key ingredient in shaping its tone. What comes out of the soundhole is a superb vintage tone only achievable after more than 50 years of "aging." It embodies the dry, fragrant resonance - the "woody tone" - that defines the D-18.

Strum hard with a pick and you get a cohesive, crisp top end mixed with a tight, never-bloated low-mid, giving it outstanding cut that never gets lost in a mix.

Note attack is extremely fast, and it tracks picking nuance beautifully. Every note separates clearly and three-dimensionally, translating the player's feeling directly into sound.

The sensation of the whole guitar resonating together like a single speaker is something a brand-new instrument can never replicate.
