Martin 1967 D-28

"A landmark instrument in folk history"

Born in 1931 and named after the British battleship HMS Dreadnought, the D-28 remains, over 90 years on, the absolute standard-bearer among acoustic guitars, loved by artists worldwide even as its specs have quietly evolved with the times. The powerful sound produced by the large "dreadnought" body Martin introduced to the world has played an essential role, especially in the history of folk music.

This particular example dates from 1967, a critically important transitional period in vintage Martin history.

The back and sides use genuine Brazilian rosewood, from before the shift to Indian rosewood in the late 1960s, giving this guitar the sweet yet clearly defined tone unique to that wood. Paired with a Sitka spruce top, the result is exactly "that sound from those old folk records" - a bright, mellow voice with the edges rounded off, amplified by the dreadnought's huge body and carried by rich overtones that captivate player and listener alike. A genuinely joyful sound that makes you want to strum big, confident chords.

The rounded headstock carries period-correct Grover "milk bottle" tuners.

The neck has a gentle V-shape with volute reinforcement. It's easy to wrap your hand around for chord shapes in the lower positions, ideal playability for strum-focused folk music. Notably, 1967 falls right in the transition from "T-bar rod" to "square rod" neck reinforcement, and this example retains the earlier T-bar rod - a highly desirable spec for vintage collectors.

The crowning detail is the original black pickguard, still intact. On guitars of this age, Martin's pickguards typically shrink and crack, leading most examples to have had them replaced, so an original survivor like this is genuinely rare. There's some lifting and what appear to be signatures left by past owners in ink, but even these add to the sense of genuine, over-half-a-century history and romance that only a real vintage instrument carries.
