The Custom 24 is the guitar that started it all - the first model Paul Reed Smith introduced at the NAMM Show in 1985, and one that has since become an icon of the company. This Wood Library Custom 24 combines a Mahogany body with a 10-Top Quilted Maple top, an East Indian Rosewood neck with a Pattern Thin profile, and a Ziricote fingerboard with J-Birds 2008 bird inlays featuring Mother of Pearl outlines. It is equipped with a PRS Patented Gen III tremolo bridge, Smoked Black hardware, and uncovered DMO pickups that deliver an open, balanced, and rich sound. The guitar comes with an original Brown Paisley hardshell case and a two-year warranty on electronics and hardware.
Guitars often come through the PRS production line and leave the factory labeled as "Wood Library" guitars. But what does that actually mean? This overview explains what makes these unique instruments special.
Tucked away upstairs in a corner of PRS's 85,000-square-foot factory are racks of extraordinary woods. Maple, mahogany, korina, rosewood, swamp ash, and dozens of other species are stored in the area known as the "Wood Library."
The Wood Library program is similar in some ways to the Private Stock program. It is an extensive menu-based program for the PRS Core line that gives authorized dealers the opportunity to create special runs tailored to their stores and customers. A common misconception is that Wood Library instruments use a separate grade of wood. That is not the case. Wood Library woods are graded using the same scale as other PRS woods: Core, 10-Top, Artist Package, and Private Stock.
What makes Wood Library guitars unique is the range of wood combinations dealers can select when ordering a special run. For example, a standard Custom 24 typically features a mahogany back, maple top, mahogany neck, and rosewood fingerboard. A dealer ordering a Wood Library Custom 24 run may choose to replace the mahogany back with korina, swamp ash, or another available wood. The standard mahogany neck could instead be replaced with maple or rosewood.
In simple terms, the Wood Library program allows dealers to customize selected materials and specifications on PRS Core guitars. Dealers can visit PRS to hand-select woods and choose options such as finishes, bird inlays, pickups, electronics, and other details for a unique production run.
The Wood Library program is an excellent option for players looking for distinctive wood combinations and specifications that differ from the standard PRS Core lineup.
