Martin Custom Shop HD28 Adirondack Honduran Rosewood 2023

This Martin Custom Shop HD28 from 2023 takes the legendary herringbone dreadnought a step further. Built with a solid Adirondack spruce top over a solid Honduran rosewood body and dressed in Golden Era appointments, it pairs classic pre-war voicing with a set of premium tonewoods that make this a truly spectacular guitar.

The HD28 honors Martin's most famous model: the classic D28 dreadnought fitted with scalloped X-bracing and the herringbone purfling that defined the brand's pre-war instruments. This Custom Shop example goes further still, combining Golden Era detailing with a solid Honduran rosewood body, which simply looks astonishing. It is complemented by a beautiful wide-grained Adirondack top.

The combination of Adirondack spruce and Honduran rosewood is a big part of the appeal here, and not just in terms of looks! Adirondack is known for its strong headroom and wide dynamic range, so this dreadnought responds beautifully whether you dig in hard or play softly, with a powerful low end and clear, ringing trebles. This is a modern guitar, but one built very much in the spirit of the vintage herringbone Martins that players have chased for decades.

As a 2023 build, this HD28 is in near mint condition. Some light traces on the pickguard tell us that is has been played, but otherwise it looks almost as new. The Custom Shop appointments are what set it apart: the Golden Era Diamonds and Squares long pattern inlay running up the ebony fingerboard, herringbone purfling, and a Honduran rosewood headstock overlay. A tortoise pickguard and a subtle aging toner finish complete the look, giving the guitar a warm, vintage-correct appearance straight out of the case.

This instrument has been carefully inspected for originality, condition and playability, then set up to our Gold Standard by a luthier. We make sure it arrives in your hands exactly as it should: sounding its best, playing effortlessly and ready to be enjoyed from the very first note.
