Gibson ES175D 1960 - Sunburst
Here it is ... the Holy Grail ... a 1960 Gibson ES175D Sunburst in very good condition. All the fittings are original including two humbucking PAF (Patent Applied For) pickups, Kluson Deluxe tuners, the zigzag tailpiece, and gold volume and tone knobs. The guitar comes with its original hard case. The ES 175 was made famous by the jazz guitar greats Herb Ellis, Jim Hall, Joe Pass and Pat Metheny. The Factory Order Number is R6101 10 which is stamped on the inside of the guitar body inside the treble f-hole. There is no serial number on the headstock. That wasn't introduced until around 1961.
I acquired the guitar in 1983, had it re-fretted later that year and used it on and off for the next 20 years. Then I switched to playing jazz piano and it has been safely stored at home over the decades. I recently had it checked over and set up by an expert. It was given a good bill of health. Playing the guitar feels like a real treat and the sound is exactly as a classic jazz guitar should sound.
There are two slight defects. The first is that some of the varnish on the neck has worn away over the years, but this has not adversely impacted on its playability. Secondly, at some time prior to my ownership, someone unsuccessfully tried to glue the bridge to the body which has left some minor glue marks on the body. The bridge should not be glued on as it needs to be movable in order to aid accurate tuning.
