Home studio use only, smoke-free, never gigged, never rack-mounted. Fully tested and working perfectly. Cosmetically excellent — the blue anodised panel is unmarked, all knob caps are present and undamaged, and the OLED display is clear and bright with no burn-in.

Freshly updated to the latest firmware, v2.1, with the V2 factory sound library installed. This matters more than people realise: the v2 update added 27 additional filter types and 14 additional effects on top of what the synth shipped with, along with a Vintage parameter for analogue-style drift and free-running oscillators. It is substantially more synth today than it was at launch. You'll be powering it on to the current firmware and the current factory bank — nothing to do, nothing to chase down.

What makes it special: the oscillators

This is the part that gets talked about, and rightly so. The Cobalt8M gives you 34 oscillator algorithms across two independent oscillator groups, covering everything from clean virtual-analogue waves through to hard sync, PWM stacks, wavetable-ish and rather stranger territory. They're crisp, enormous, and they sit in a mix beautifully. If you already own something with a big characterful filter and want a source with real detail and movement going into it, this is a very good box to own.

Eight voices, bi-timbral — run two completely independent patches at once, split or layered, each with its own MIDI channel. There's a 4-part modulation matrix with 8 slots, three envelopes, two LFOs plus a per-voice LFO, a programmable arpeggiator and a 64-step sequencer with up to 8 notes per step.

Desktop or 19" rack. It sits happily on a desk at a comfortable angle, and it's also a 3U rack module. (See "What's included" below regarding the rack ears.)

Deep editor software. MODALapp runs on Mac, PC, iOS and Android and gives you the entire synth on a big screen — full patch editing and a librarian. This genuinely transforms living with it, because the module format is compact and the panel does a lot of double duty. Free download from Modal.

Connectivity: stereo audio out on ¼" jacks, headphone out, audio input so you can run external sources through the Cobalt8M's FX engines, 5-pin DIN MIDI In and Out, USB MIDI, analogue clock in and out on 3.5mm, plus sustain and expression pedal inputs.
