For sale is a breathtaking Martin D-18 Authentic 1937 in Excellent condition. Built by the Custom Shop in Nazareth, PA, in 2022, this instrument is widely considered the holy grail of modern mahogany dreadnoughts. To design this model, Martin painstakingly measured and used as a reference the exact vintage 1937 D-18 owned and toured by James Taylor in the early 1970s. If you are seeking that dry, woody, cannon-like pre-war tone without the $50,000+ vintage price tag, this is the one.
Condition This guitar has been carefully played, properly humidified, and kept in a smoke-free environment. It remains in excellent condition with only the faintest signs of careful use (no structural issues, no cracks, and minimal-to-no fret wear). The factory Vintage Gloss finish gives it the perfect soft patina of a well-cared-for golden era instrument.
Setup & PlayabilityThe setup is perfect with no string buzz. The action is correct and highly comfortable across the entire board, playing cleanly whether you are driving it hard with a flatpick or playing delicate fingerstyle arrangements. The period-correct 1937 neck profile is full and substantial, filling the hand beautifully to prevent playing fatigue while transferring maximum resonance to the body.
The Tone Thanks to the VTS (Vintage Tone System) Torrefied Adirondack Spruce top, forward-shifted scalloped bracing, and full hot hide glue construction, this guitar has incredible volume and headroom. It delivers that signature pre-war Martin voice—a powerful, muscular low-end, punchy midrange fundamentals, and clear, ringing trebles that jump out of the soundhole.
