For sale is an original-era 1971 Ampeg Dan Armstrong, one of the most distinctive and collectible electric guitars of the early ’70s.
Serial number: A2182D
Designed by Dan Armstrong for Ampeg, these guitars are instantly recognizable for their solid clear Lucite body, maple neck, 24-fret rosewood fingerboard, and innovative removable/interchangeable pickup system. They’re also known for their excellent sustain and unmistakable look.
The guitar is in great cosmetic condition for a 55-year-old instrument. It is certainly not “like new,” and shows the kind of normal age and wear you would expect from a vintage guitar of this era, but overall it presents extremely well.
It was also recently gone through extensively by a professional luthier, with significant work completed to make it a solid and reliable player:
- Complete refret with 24 StewMac #149 jumbo frets
- New bone nut
- Truss rod repaired, re-threaded and properly reinstalled
- Custom truss rod nut and washers fabricated
- Electronics serviced - grounds redone, components cleaned and tested
- Custom setup and neck adjustment/reset
- Custom machined and modified neck shim installed
- Fresh set of D’Addario EXL115 11–49 strings
The original case is included. The case does have some damage, as shown in the photos, which is not particularly surprising for a case that is approximately 55 years old. It remains a great addition to the guitar and is part of its history.
A substantial amount of work has gone into getting this guitar playing properly while preserving the character of an original vintage Dan Armstrong.
These original Ampeg-era Lucite guitars were produced for only a short period and have become genuine pieces of guitar history, associated with players such as Keith Richards and Joe Perry.
A great opportunity to own an original 1971 Dan Armstrong with its original case, in excellent overall condition for its age, and with the important mechanical and playability work already taken care of.
Happy to provide additional photos, details, or information about the guitar and the recent luthier work.
