Up for sale is a rare, classic mid-90s Allen & Heath GS3-V 24-channel analog mixing desk. Built in the UK during the golden era of project studio recording, this console is famous for its warm British preamps, musical EQ, and intelligent space-saving architecture.
The "V" variant is the upgraded version featuring built-in VCA and MIDI mute automation, making it a fantastic analog centerpiece to pair with a modern DAW or tape machine setup.
Key Highlights & Features
- 48 Inputs at Mixdown: Thanks to its true in-line architecture, each of the 24 channels features dual input paths (Channel and Monitor/Tape Return). You can flip and mix 48 signals simultaneously, plus 4 dedicated stereo FX returns.
- Classic British Audio Quality: Equipped with boutique-quality, low-noise microphone preamps and highly musical 3-band sweepable EQs that add analog warmth digital plugins cannot replicate.
- Onboard Automation: Standalone or MIDI-driven VCA mute processor allows you to sequence, store, and recall complex mute patches directly from your DAW.
- Silent External PSU: Includes the original external, heavy-duty linear power supply. It is entirely fan-free, providing absolute silence inside critical tracking and control rooms.
- Expandable Design: Built on a rigid aluminum chassis engineered to accept original GS3-EX 8-channel sidecar expanders if you ever need to scale up.
Technical Specs
- Frame Size: 24 Channels / 8 Sub-groups / Stereo Mix Bus
- I/O: Balanced XLR Mic inputs with per-channel +48V Phantom Power, 1/4" Line and Tape Returns (-10dBV / +4dBu internally switchable)
- Inserts: Dedicated TRS inserts on every channel, sub-group, and main stereo master bus
Condition
Unit is in good condition with cosmetic wear typical of its age. One of the green automation buttons is sunk into the top plate (which can probably be popped back out). There's a small ding on the right side of the frame.
The road case is a bit rough but still 100% works.
Repair Notes
The mixer itself was serviced in December of 2017 by Tristan Miller of CatherineNorth Electronics in Hamilton, Ontario. He's a reputable serviceman. Repair notes from that service:
- Last 4 modules reported issues with Automation.
- Automation Daughter Board was cleaned, Solder joints cleaned with fresh solder, and fine-traces checked for continuity.
- All channel strips tested, dirty Insert connectors and switches cleaned as found.
- All EQ's work with-in reason, indicating no urgent need for a re-cap.
- Automation system tested almost daily for many days.
- Battery for Memory replaced.
I can provide the service receipt at the buyer's request.
I’ll also throw in 3x8 channel insert snakes (for use a patch bay- not included).
This thing is a beast. Pickup only in the Geary Ave area.
