Follows description from Equipboard:
The Boss OD-2 Turbo OverDrive is a classic, highly versatile guitar effects pedal introduced in 1985 as the direct successor to the legendary Boss OD-1. Manufactured until 1995, it stands out for featuring a fully discrete circuit layout (utilizing JFETs and transistors rather than standard integrated circuit op-amps) to deliver natural, smooth clipping. Its defining feature is a dual-mode topology that allows guitarists to toggle between transparent, low-gain crunch and aggressive, saturated distortion.
Dual Sound Modes
The core functionality of the pedal revolves around its selectable mode switch:
- Turbo Off (Standard Mode): Delivers a smooth, dynamic, and traditional overdrive heavily inspired by the warm, mid-focused character of the original OD-1. It excels at adding dynamic edge-of-breakup grit for blues and classic rock rhythm parts.
- Turbo On (Turbo Mode): Significantly bumps up the gain structure, mid-range emphasis, and compression. This mode pushes the pedal straight into thick distortion territory, boosting sustain and feedback for lead guitar solos—a tonal profile famously utilized by Prince during his late '80s and '90s eras.
Control Interface
The user interface features four streamlined knobs to shape the effect:
- Level: Adjusts the overall output volume when the effect is engaged.
- Tone: Controls the high-frequency balance to add brightness or smooth out harshness (a notable upgrade missing from the older OD-1).
- Drive: Regulates the intensity, saturation, and amount of overdrive clipping.
- Turbo Toggle: A dedicated rotary selector to switch between standard and high-gain modes.
