The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi 2 Dual Op-Amp, developed with Josh Scott of JHS Pedals, is a modern recreation of a lost Big Muff circuit from the late 1970s. Josh Scott and EHX discovered the original hand-drawn schematic in the workshop of Bob Myer, one of the designers behind the original Big Muff.

What it does

It's an analog fuzz pedal for electric guitar, producing the classic Big Muff combination of:

• Huge, sustaining fuzz
• Thick low end
• Stronger, more noticeable mids than some traditional Big Muffs
• Crispy, aggressive high end
• From gritty, medium-gain crunch to heavy saturated fuzz
• A somewhat rougher, less refined clipping character than a traditional Big Muff

EHX describes it as slightly more dynamic and fuzzy while retaining the familiar Big Muff sustain.

Controls

• Volume – overall output level
• Tone – moves from darker, bass-heavy sounds to brighter, more aggressive tones
• Sustain – controls the amount of distortion and sustain

It also has true bypass and a unique latching/momentary footswitch. Press normally to turn the effect on/off; holding the switch produces a temporary burst of fuzz.

The important distinction: this isn't simply a reissue of the famous 1978 Op-Amp Big Muff. The Big Muff Pi 2 uses a different dual-op-amp circuit that had been sitting in Bob Myer's old files since the 1970s. That's what makes this pedal historically interesting to Big Muff collectors.
