Altec 615b

For sale is a very unusual pair of vintage Altec Lansing 615B Duplex 15-inch coaxial loudspeakers, installed in substantial custom wood bass-reflex cabinets.

Both speakers are currently playing properly and sound excellent.

The 615B is a relatively uncommon vintage Altec Duplex design using a 15-inch low-frequency cone with a coaxially mounted horn high-frequency section. The factory specification is 16 ohms, approximately 20 Hz–12 kHz response, 35-watt power handling and a 1.55 kHz crossover point. 

These include the genuine Altec N-1550-A dividing networks, and I have included interior photographs showing the Altec drivers, networks, cabinet construction, internal bracing, damping and three-port bass-reflex arrangement.

The cabinets are extremely substantial and appear to have been purpose-built for these drivers. They have walnut-toned wood exteriors, black front baffles and removable fronts/grilles. They present very nicely overall, but they are vintage speakers and do show some age and cosmetic wear. Please examine the photographs closely.

Sonically, these have the qualities people seek out vintage Altec systems for: very high sensitivity, tremendous immediacy, excellent vocal presence, effortless dynamics and the ability to sound alive with relatively modest amplifier power. They are particularly enjoyable with tube amplification.

Because of their size and weight, local pickup in the Houston/Sugar Land, Texas area is strongly preferred. I may be able to assist with regional delivery or freight arrangements, but that would need to be discussed before purchase.

These are significantly less common than the usual 604-based Altec systems and would make a great vintage high-efficiency system for someone interested in classic Altec sound without paying current 604/605 prices.
