RARE EARLY-1960s KLIPSCH CORNWALL II “VERTICAL” C-WO-15 SPEAKERS — JENSEN / ALNICO — OILED WALNUT

Offered is an unusually early pair of Klipsch Cornwall loudspeakers in factory oiled-walnut cabinets, model C-WO-15.

These are commonly identified as the original “Vertical Cornwall II”—not the later 1980s Cornwall II. The orientation of the midrange and tweeter horns allowed the cabinets to be used upright for stereo or horizontally as a center speaker between Klipschorns.

Serial numbers are 179 and 3A16. Although they are not consecutive, both speakers contain matching principal components and the same early factory configuration:

• Jensen-manufactured Klipsch K-33-J 15-inch woofers
• Atlas-manufactured Klipsch K-55-V compression drivers
• Matching early metal midrange horns
• Original round-Alnico Klipsch K-77/EV T-35 tweeters
• Matching early Klipsch crossover networks
• Original fixed grille cloth
• Original rear-access cabinet construction
• Factory oiled-walnut finish
• Approximately 98.5 dB sensitivity

The Jensen woofer in serial 3A16 is stamped 220315, indicating Jensen manufacture during the 15th week of 1963. Serial 3A16 uses Klipsch’s early 1963 “A” serial format, while serial 179 carries the preceding numerical format.

Both speakers have been thoroughly auditioned and sound amazing. All woofers, midrange drivers and tweeters operate properly. They have the effortless sensitivity, immediacy, rich tone and explosive dynamics for which early Cornwalls are known. They are especially well suited to low-powered tube amplification.

CONDITION

The oiled-walnut veneer is exceptionally clean, with beautiful grain and excellent presentation for speakers more than 60 years old. The front trim and original fixed grille cloth are also remarkably well preserved.

Unlike later Cornwalls, the grille assemblies are permanently installed and are not intended to be removed. The cabinets have minor age-related marks and some cosmetic wear on the rear panels, including previous screw holes. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

The original crossover networks remain installed. They have been preserved rather than indiscriminately modified.

The aftermarket LMAHL tweeters shown or mentioned elsewhere are not included in this sale.
