This is an original BOSS CE-1 Chorus Ensemble, made in Japan and dating to June 1979.

The CE-1 is one of the most iconic analog modulation effects ever made. Introduced in the 1970s as BOSS’s first effects pedal, its chorus and vibrato circuit was derived from the legendary Roland Jazz Chorus amplifier and became the foundation for the classic BOSS chorus sound.

There is something very distinctive about an original CE-1. The chorus has a warm, deep and spacious character that feels especially impressive when used in stereo, while the Vibrato mode offers a much stronger and more expressive modulation with dedicated Rate and Depth controls.

The built-in preamp is also an important part of the CE-1 sound. Together with the High/Low input sensitivity switch and Level control, it adds its own coloration and character that many players specifically look for in an original unit.

This example was manufactured in June 1979 during the classic early Japanese production period.

Please note that the Depth potentiometer has been replaced. This is therefore not a completely original, untouched example, but the replacement allows the control to operate properly.

For players and collectors looking for the unmistakable sound and feel of a genuine vintage CE-1, this is a wonderful piece of BOSS history that remains every bit as inspiring to use today.
