Shell Pink, round-lam rosewood, hand-wound Fat ’60s pickups and 7.4 lb on the scale: a 1963 Stratocaster Relic Masterbuilt by Andy Hicks — one owner, with the COA, the Masterbuilt folio and even the signed Shop Floor Traveler.
Hicks builds with a player’s ear. This one takes the 1963 template — small headstock with the three-patent decal, clay dots, round-laminate rosewood board — and layers on the playability tweaks that artists like Eric Johnson have quietly had the Custom Shop do to their own vintage Strats: the board is dressed to a flatter 12” radius and fretted with 6105 narrow-tall wire (fret ends left straight, not rounded, at Hicks’ spec), and the neck is a Modern “V” that fills the hand without getting in the way (.850” at the 1st fret, .890” at the 12th). The alder body was sorted for light weight and the rosewood sorted for dark. Underneath the parchment guard: hand-wound Fat ’60s single-coils with a reverse-wound middle, 250K pots and a Tone Saver treble bleed, so the sparkle survives when you roll the volume back. The Shell Pink nitro carries the checking, edge wear and worn-through spots of a well-loved ’63, the hardware is aged to match, and the whole guitar weighs 3.35 kg (7.4 lb).
