Epiphone / 1968 FT-79
A historic instrument symbolizing the golden age of 1960s acoustic guitars - this 1968 Epiphone FT-79 (Texan) is the very guitar Paul McCartney of The Beatles famously used to record "Yesterday" and played on landmark television broadcasts, sending its name around the world. This is a genuine vintage piece that still carries the air of that era.
1968 sits just before Epiphone's US production era came to a close in 1969-1970, making it a particularly special year, highly prized and sought after on the vintage market. The heart of its sound is the "adjustable bridge" construction unique to this period - beyond the convenience of instantly fine-tuning the action with a single screw, the ceramic or plastic saddle of the era produces a distinctive overtone content unlike anything else.
Combined with a longer scale length than a Gibson J-45, it delivers an overwhelmingly percussive, "jangly" punch the instant you strum. Its well-defined, gritty low-mids with clear note separation are exactly the "sound off the record" that's ideal for country, folk, and rock rhythm playing.
The biggest highlight in both looks and playability is its slim "narrow neck" profile, iconic of the late 1960s. The smart, roughly 40mm nut width grip feels remarkably comfortable, even for players with small hands or modern players in general, gripping naturally from low, open-position chords all the way up to high-fret phrases.
The large pickguard decorating the body uses the screwed-down mounting style unique to this era, carrying the proud identity of the original production period right down to the smallest detail.
Even after more than half a century, this guitar combines the deep, resonant box tone only achievable once the wood has fully, perfectly dried out, together with the exceptional bite that only an Epiphone Texan can deliver. Take this opportunity to experience genuine vintage tone for yourself.
