Tenori-On was designed by Japanese media artist Toshio Iwai, as a 'new musical instrument for the digital age'. It is a gorgeous, boutique electronic instrument which came out as a limited edition in the mid-2000s. This is the original TNR-W version with the magnesium case and a 16x16 white LED matrix on both front and back (so you can mount it vertically and have your audience appreciate the beautiful light show:) There was a later, cheaper TNR-O version with a white plastic case and orange LEDs on front only, but it's not a patch on the beautiful original:)

The front LED panel is a matrix of 256 buttons for editing notes. You can use it as a grid sequencer (16 layers, 16 steps) or there are a bunch of interesting generative modes, from bouncing balls, through random modes to drawing and rotating shapes, which can lead to creative inspiration. Lovely little details, such as the firework-like animations, will keep you hooked.

It is a super-fun device and a collectable noughties classic which can be learned quickly and used as a sketchpad for coming up with new ideas or capturing the tune going round in your head. It might look like a toy, but is a useful and inspirational instrument when connected to external amplification, and makes a brilliant little live MIDI sequencer.
