Gibson SJ-200 1995 - Natural-KOA
1995 Gibson J-200 Koa Limited Edition #47 of 250 – Exceptional Figured Koa – One Owner – OHSC + COA
Offered here is an exceptionally rare 1995 Gibson J-200 Koa Limited Edition, #47 of only 250 produced, built in Bozeman, Montana.
Serial Number: 91145062
I have owned this guitar since new.
I currently own three Gibson J-200s and have owned many others over the years, and this particular Koa J-200 has always stood apart from the standard J-200s I have owned and played. It has a noticeably richer, deeper and warmer voice, with greater low-end depth while still retaining the projection, clarity and room-filling character for which the J-200 is famous.
Visually, the guitar is equally special. The highly figured koa back and sides are spectacular, with strong flame and movement throughout the back and around the body. The figuring is one of the defining features of this limited-production model.
Identification
- 1995 Gibson J-200 Koa Limited Edition
- Made in Bozeman, Montana, USA
- Limited Edition #47 of 250
- Serial number 91145062
- Matching serial number stamped on rear of headstock
- Matching original Gibson factory label inside the guitar
- Original Gibson hardshell case
- Original Gibson Certificate of Authenticity
- Original Gibson literature and case candy shown in the photographs
Condition
The guitar is in excellent overall condition for a 1995 instrument and has been very well cared for throughout my ownership.
The primary cosmetic issue is the original J-200 pickguard, which had a slight warp virtually from the beginning. Over time, some of the adhesive has loosened. I have deliberately left the original pickguard intact rather than replacing or modifying it.
There is also some normal age-related patina and oxidation to the gold hardware, consistent with a guitar of this age.
Please examine the detailed photographs carefully. The top, back, sides, neck, headstock, fingerboard, bridge and case all present extremely well.
COA / Serial Number Disclosure
There is one unusual paperwork discrepancy that I want to disclose fully.
The guitar itself is completely consistent:
- The serial number stamped on the back of the headstock is 91145062
- The original Gibson interior label also reads 91145062
- The factory label identifies this guitar as #47 of 250 for 1995
However, the Gibson Certificate of Authenticity that accompanied the guitar when new lists another 1995 J-200 Koa serial number: 91725051.
I have owned this guitar since new and only recently noticed the discrepancy after retrieving the certificate, which had been stored away for many years.
Because both permanent factory identifiers on the guitar match one another, this appears to have been a Gibson or dealer paperwork mix-up involving another guitar from the same 1995 limited run.
Nothing is being concealed. Photographs of the stamped headstock serial number, interior factory label and Certificate of Authenticity are included so that the next owner has the complete documentation and history.
The COA correctly identifies the model as a J-200 Koa, dates it to 1995, confirms that it was part of a limited edition, and bears the signature of Gibson luthier Ren Ferguson.
Tone
This is not just a collector’s guitar.
Having owned many J-200s over the years, I find the voice of this particular Koa example especially impressive. Compared with the standard maple J-200s I know well, this guitar has a deeper, richer and more substantial tonal character, particularly in the lower register.
It still has the broad projection and unmistakable Super Jumbo presence associated with the J-200, but with additional warmth and depth that make it distinctive.
Included
- 1995 Gibson J-200 Koa Limited Edition #47 of 250
