This instrument is in plug and play condition, fully functional. It was never in gigs. It spent decades in storage. It has less than 5 years of use.

It has brand new strings and hammers from Vintage Vibe and sounds fantastic. 

It didn’t need a “restoration” because it never had rust. Regular service (including lubrication of the tuning hardware) sufficed. I attached photos of the inside at different levels of disassembly while the strings and hammer tips were being replaced so you can see for yourself.

It has been updated with the modern “clavigel” which does a much better job than the traditional yarn.

Also, the original preamp (which was quirky and noisy, as you may already know) was replaced with the new one designed by Vintage Vibe. The “Vibanet” preamp, which sold by 500-600 dollars (the part only, without the installation) and now it is sold out. 

I never heard my Clavinet sounding better and I bought it brand new in 1981…

Because this instrument is an electrified clavichord, not a piano, the feeling of the keys themselves never changed. They are remarkably white and smooth but one of them has a tiny tiny barely noticeable scratch, smaller than 1 millimeter. It won’t bother you, but I had to mention.

Refer to the linked video to hear its actual sound, verify how even all the keys sound, and notice what a great job the clavigel does. It is a quick phone video and there is a lot of mechanical key noise which wouldn’t appear on a studio recording. (The phone was too close to the higher keys, less mechanical noise from the lower keys got recorded.) The amp was a Marshall DSL5 connected directly, flat EQ.

I also uploaded audio (recorded thru a DI and unprocessed) covering the 4 pickup settings. The hiss is what it is (clavinets will be clavinets). You’ll hear how a simple noise gate makes it manageable. The hum could change a little depending on the electromagnetic interference (EMI) of a particular location. This unit has extra custom shielding on the pickups cable.

Cosmetically, there are minor marks here and there. Nothing to be bother by, considering the age of the instrument.

Let me point out that the “half case” that attaches to the instrument used to have three latches but only two remain. The one in the middle is missing.

The clear plastic music rest is included. It was in excellent condition but during the recent service got a couple of fresh scratches. See the pictures.

My dream is that wonderful music be created and recorded with this instrument. My dream is that it would make history.
