Gibson 1964 ES-175D
You want to elegantly ring out that sweet, deep, rich, genuine hollow-body tone that jazz and blues legends played - but a lot of vintage hollow-bodies have thin necks that don't sit well in the hand, forcing compromise in playability. Sound familiar?
Since its debut in 1949, Gibson's ES-175 has captivated players worldwide with its beautifully weighty voice cutting through silence. But around 1965, the spec shifted to a narrower neck and a 14-degree headstock angle, losing some of that grip feel and ideal string tension.
This 1964 Gibson ES-175, having reached the peak of its maturity after 62 years, perfectly embodies both the aesthetic of Gibson's golden era and genuinely excellent real-world playability. Right before the 1965 spec change, this is the ultimate 1964-only configuration: a comfortably wide 42.4mm neck for the fingers, and a 17-degree headstock angle producing clear attack and sustain.
It's fitted with rare original numbered PAF pickups, which continue climbing in value in the vintage market. They capture every subtle nuance of your picking, weaving together sultry highs and rich overtones. The fully hollow 16 1/4-inch body resonates with the warm, enveloping tone of a fine acoustic instrument, and combined with the volute-less one-piece mahogany neck, the whole body resonates beautifully.
