Quint Mandolin is made by Master Luthier Qin Ji Duo from China, who learned instrument making at several manufacturers, was involved in the founding and production of North Field Mandolin, and then became independent. This particular instrument is an Archtop Octave Mandolin Maple Short Scale Cutaway. Octave mandolins have recently been attracting attention overseas as many mandolinists actively use them. It features a carved Italian spruce archtop, figured maple sides, figured maple flat back, a 3-piece laminated maple/mahogany/maple neck, a maple pickguard, a 508mm short scale, a premium ebony radius fingerboard, Goto tuners, an ultra-thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and a cutaway body. The tuning is the same as a mandolin, 1E, 2A, 3D, 4G in unison, but one octave lower. Therefore, it can be played using the same fingerings as a mandolin. The range is similar to that of a guitar, and many international artists use it for singing and playing, just like a guitar. With a 12-fret joint neck, radius fingerboard, and cutaway, it offers excellent playability, allowing for smooth playing even in the high positions. The short-scale model feels closer to a mandolin, making it versatile as a main instrument for lead playing as well as backing vocals.
