1974 Greco EG480 Les Paul Custom in Sunburst
Greco EG-480 Les Paul Custom in Sunburst - 1970s - Good Condition
A characterful piece of 1970s Japanese guitar production, this Greco EG-480 takes the familiar Les Paul Custom formula and gives it the distinctly individual construction found on Greco’s earlier EG-series instruments. These early models pre-date the increasingly exacting replicas Greco became famous for later in the decade, with period EG-480 examples featuring bolt-on neck construction, a lighter hollow/chambered-style body and Japanese humbuckers. Finished in Sunburst and complete with a soft bag, this is a great example of the earlier, slightly quirkier side of vintage Greco production.
Condition
This guitar is in good condition. It has some dings and cosmetic marks consistent with its age and normal use, all of which contribute to the character you would expect from a guitar dating from the 1970s (see photos).
None of these imperfections affects the playability or sound of the instrument. Most importantly, it remains in good playing condition, the electronics are functioning as intended, and it is ready to go straight into regular use.

Sound and performance
The twin-humbucker arrangement gives the EG-480 the broad, full sound expected from this style of guitar. The neck position provides a warmer, rounder voice for clean passages and smoother lead work, while the bridge pickup adds more attack and definition for driven rhythm sounds and classic-rock tones.
Period examples of the EG-480 are documented with Japanese-made Maxon humbuckers, which are a notable part of the appeal of these early Grecos. Surviving examples are frequently described as having a lively, slightly more open response than a conventional solid Les Paul because of their lighter internal construction.

Playability and functionality
One of the interesting things about these earlier EG-480s is that, despite looking immediately familiar, they do not necessarily feel or respond exactly like a conventional solid-body Les Paul. The bolt-on neck and lighter internal construction give them their own personality, while the familiar 24¾-style playing format and twin-humbucker controls make the guitar straightforward to get along with.
The Custom-style appointments, including the block fingerboard inlays and more elaborate overall appearance, give it plenty of vintage visual appeal, while the Sunburst finish makes this example stand out from the darker finishes often associated with Les Paul Custom-style guitars.
A great choice if you want a genuine vintage Japanese guitar from the formative years of Greco’s EG range. It has plenty of age-related character, an interesting place in the development of Japanese Les Paul-style guitars, and a distinctly different personality from the later, increasingly faithful Greco replicas that followed.
