The PRE-Q is a hand-made, hardwired tube preamp inspired by the early 1970’s Ampeg VT40 “top-loader” amplifiers, with a foot-switchable Console Boost (my take on the Zvex Super Hard On) in front!

The VT40 + Zvex Super Hard On combination is rumored to be one of the core tones on the landmark Queens of the Stone Age album Songs for the Deaf.

What makes the PRE-Q unique from most other amps and preamps is the use of an inductor for the midrange control. Most EQs use a resistor/capacitor network, which can sound clogged or muddy in the mids. The use of an inductor to boost or cut mids lends more of a musical and resonant character, resulting in what sounds more like what you’d get from a high-end piece of studio gear like a Pultec MEQ vs. something that would compare to a Boss GE-7.

Each unit is hand wired by me in Salem, OR on eyelet boards and features the same real, substantial parts that you would find inside any full-size boutique amp: 600 volt Mallory 150 & WIMA capacitors, 1w carbon film resistors, JJ 12AX7s, Belton tube sockets, etc.

Included: 12 V DC, 2.5 A adapter (2.1 x 5.5 mm) that steps up to ~250 V inside the pedal is included. Controls: Top row — Treble, Bass. Bottom row — Boost, Middle, Volume. Size: 7 x 7 x 3 in (with knobs and tubes).
