The Boss BOX-40 is a premium, limited-edition commemorative set released in 2017 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Boss's iconic compact pedal line. It features reissues of the first three compact pedals ever produced by the company in 1977.

The Three Reissued Pedals

The set recreates the "foundational trio" that launched the Boss compact series:

• OD-1 Overdrive: One of the world's first overdrive pedals. It uses an asymmetric clipping circuit to produce warm, tube-like harmonics. This reissue specifically uses the original four-op-amp circuit design from the earliest versions.
• PH-1 Phaser: Designed for more clarity and depth than other phasers of the 1970s. For this set, the FETs (Field Effect Transistors) were carefully matched to ensure the modulation sweep is identical to the 1977 original.
• SP-1 Spectrum: A rare "esoteric" pedal that acts as a single-band parametric equalizer with a fixed level boost. It allows you to sweep the frequency from 500Hz to 5kHz to find a specific "sweet spot" in your tone.

Key Collector Details

• Production Limit: Only 1,500 sets were produced worldwide.
• Manufacturing: Unlike standard modern Boss pedals, these were hand-wired on a special production line in Japan using hand-selected components to ensure the sound was a 1:1 match to the vintage originals.
• Presentation: They come in a deluxe black presentation box with a 40th-anniversary logo and include a numbered message card from the President of Boss, Yoshihiro Ikegami.
• Modern Enhancements: While the audio circuits are vintage-spec, Boss added three subtle modern conveniences:
• 1. PSA-Compatible Power: They work with modern 9V power supplies (the originals often required the older ACA adapters).
  2. LED Status Light: The "Check" light actually stays on when the effect is engaged (the originals only blinked briefly).
  3. Reinforced Battery Snaps: Built for better durability.
