MUSIC MAN 1977 StingRay
Refretted and ready to play - one of the earliest pre-Ernie examples!
After Leo Fender left Fender in 1972, he went on to found Music Man. The StingRay, released by Music Man in 1976, is widely credited as the bass that put active electronics on the map, and remains a mainstay to this day - largely unchanged in shape and style despite minor updates over the years. This particular example dates from before Ernie Ball's acquisition of the company in 1984, making it a genuine example of the sought-after "pre-Ernie" era.
It shows the hallmark features of the early pre-Ernie period: a 3-bolt neck joint, string-through-body bridge, and a flat body shape without an elbow cut. The neck and body are dated 1977. The volume pot is dated 1976, the treble pot has been replaced, and the bass pot appears original though its date code is no longer legible.
The controls are the early spec - a single volume with bass/treble boost only, an early 2-band EQ. It delivers everything from a sharp, aggressive slap tone when you boost the EQ, to a woody, deep resonance - a genuinely special tone only available from this era.
The mute mechanism on the bridge is still fully intact on this example. From the punchy, defined power that only a StingRay can deliver, to a warm, old-school tone using the mute, this bass covers real range.
