Gibson Custom Shop '57 Les Paul Standard VOS in Candy Green. 2020. Purchased new from Musician's Friend and owned from new by me.
Mint condition. Smoke-free home, kept in its case for nearly its entire life, and stored in a climate-controlled environment the whole time.
The color is the point
The '57 Les Paul Standard is, by definition, a goldtop. That is what Gibson built in 1957 and that is what the Custom Shop reissues year after year. Candy Green came out of a short Gibson Custom color run that put a handful of non-historic finishes on the R7 platform, and it was gone almost immediately.
So what you are looking at is a genuine Custom Shop Historic reissue, built to 1957 spec in every way that affects how it sounds and plays, wearing a finish Gibson has never offered as a regular production option. If you have been waiting for a Les Paul that does not look like every other Les Paul on the wall without giving up an inch of the real thing, this is that guitar.
What VOS actually means
Worth being clear, because it gets confused with relicing constantly.
VOS stands for Vintage Original Spec, and it is not aged, distressed or relic'd. There are no dings, no scratches, no worn-through finish and no simulated wear. What Gibson does is take the nitrocellulose finish down from a high gloss to a soft satin sheen, and lightly dull the nickel hardware so it does not look chrome-bright. The effect is a guitar that looks like it was bought new in 1957 and then kept immaculately, rather than one that was dragged through thirty years of clubs.
If you want a mirror gloss, this is not that. If you want the look of a well-cared-for vintage instrument with zero actual wear, this is exactly that.
The Custom Shop spec
This is where the money goes, and it is genuinely different from a USA-line Les Paul Standard:
- Custombucker pickups with unpotted Alnico III magnets. These are Gibson's closest recreation of a real PAF, wound to vintage output and deliberately left unpotted so they breathe and bloom the way originals do. Lower output than a modern humbucker, far more dynamic, and they clean up dramatically when you roll the volume back. This is the single biggest sonic difference from a production Les Paul.
- Hand-wired harness with CTS pots and paper-in-oil capacitors. No circuit board, no push-pull switching, nothing to break. The tone controls actually sweep usefully instead of doing nothing until the last quarter turn.
- Solid, non-weight-relieved mahogany body with a carved maple top. No chambering and no swiss-cheese routing. It weighs what a Les Paul is supposed to weigh and it sustains accordingly.
- One-piece mahogany neck with the long neck tenon, glued deep into the body the way Gibson did it in the fifties. More wood in the joint, more coupling, more sustain.
- Authentic '57 rounded neck profile. A proper handful, not a modern slim taper. If you have only played modern Gibsons, this neck is a revelation.
- Rosewood fingerboard, 12" radius, 22 frets, trapezoid inlays.
- ABR-1 bridge with an aluminum stopbar tailpiece and Kluson-style tuners with keystone buttons. Period-correct lightweight hardware, which matters more to resonance than people expect.
- Nitrocellulose lacquer, thin, and it will keep improving with age.
Condition
Mint. I bought it new from Musician's Friend in 2020 and I am the only owner. It has lived in its case in a climate-controlled, smoke-free house for essentially the entire time since.
No modifications, no replaced parts, no repairs, no routing. Nothing has been swapped and no solder has been touched. The headstock has never been broken or repaired. Frets are full with no visible wear.
Every mark of "aging" you see is the factory VOS treatment described above, applied in Nashville, not player wear.
Photos show the guitar as it is today. Ask for close-ups of anything at all and I will send them the same day.
