MTI Auto-Orchestra AO-1

For sale is a vintage MTI AO-1 electronic organ system in very good condition. This is an unusually complete example that includes the main console, bass foot pedalboard, expression pedal, preset/rhythm cartridge, metal stand, and original cases.

The MTI AO-1 comes from an era when electronic organ manufacturers were developing increasingly portable alternatives to traditional full-size home and stage organs. Rather than being permanently housed in a large wooden cabinet, the AO-1 uses a modular design with a separate keyboard/console, bass pedalboard, expression pedal, and stand. The individual components can be broken down and stored in their respective cases for transportation.

The AO-1 was designed to provide an organist with a complete performance setup, combining keyboard voices with foot-controlled bass, expression control, and preset/rhythm accompaniment. The included bass pedalboard allows bass notes to be played with the feet in traditional organ fashion, while the expression pedal provides real-time control while performing.

Also included is the preset/rhythm cartridge, an especially interesting piece of the original system. It expands the console's accompaniment/performance capabilities and is a great example of the proprietary technology used in electronic instruments before modern digital keyboards, MIDI, software instruments, and downloadable presets became commonplace.
