I am selling a Höfner Model 4579 “Hi-Fi" Les Paul Style guitar with wooden pickups cases. Various versions of this guitar were made by Hofner between 1969 and the mid 70.'s, mostly with the alternate blade style pickups. The wooden Hi Fi pickups are seldom seen. The neck has a rosewood fretboard and is straight with a slight bit of relief. The frets look like they have been polished at some point but still have lots of play, and action is medium to low.

This guitar has a wooden maple body that is semi-hollow and chambered, with laminate top and bottom covered in clean black cellulose. There are some slight dents and chips but this guitar is in good to excellent condition. Everything is original, including the tuners, often missing pickguard, and knobs.

The bridge pickup is full and loud and reads 7.2 on the meter, the neck pickup is considerably softer and thinner in sound, without a reading. I took a direct reading from the pickup and had the same result so the issue is with the pickup. It kind of sounds like it is in the bridge position, not the neck, and has been this way since I began to play this guitar last year. The pickups were potted by Hofner in the factory.

I can’t find much information about these pickups and why they are “Hi Fi” but I think there is some relationship to what Les Paul was doing with his studio guitars in the late 60’s/early 70’s, the idea being these are more direct and clean for recording. The wooden pickup cases were designed, it seems, to help with preventing unwanted feedback. I’ve included a Hofner advertisement that seems to point to this.

The truss rod works and loosens and tightens. It will need a 3mm to 3.25mm hex with a short arm to fully implement.

Neck Pickup: No reading

Bridge Pickup: 7.2

Scale: 25 inches

Length: 40.5 inches

Does not come with a case but I will pack professionally and ship quickly.

I’ve described this 55 year old guitar as best as I can with words and images, if you have any questions be sure to ask me before you buy.
