Fender Precision PB62 JV - Made in Japan MIJ - 1982 Vintage - 3 Tone Sunburst
Meccaniche, ponte e sellette vintage-style appaiono come originali.

For sale is a 1982 Fender Precision Bass PB62 Vintage Reissue Made in Japan, finished in 3-Tone Sunburst, serial number JV05993.
The bass belongs to the first and highly regarded Fender Japan JV (Japanese Vintage) production run. The neck heel bears the pencil date “6-2-82”, corresponding to June 2nd, 1982, fully consistent with the very low JV serial number and this very early production period.
The instrument has been carefully inspected in order to provide the most accurate and transparent description possible.
The original “Made in Japan” marking, which was located on the headstock next to the Fender decal, was intentionally scraped off at some point in the past. This was sometimes done at the time to conceal the Japanese origin of the instrument. The alteration is clearly visible and is disclosed here for complete transparency.
The fingerboard is rosewood with the correct vintage-style slab board construction and features an attractive natural grain, with alternating dark streaks and brown/chocolate-colored areas.
The frets are in good overall condition, with no deep grooves or particularly significant irregularities. Estimated remaining fret life is approximately 60%.
The 3-Tone Sunburst finish appears very thin and shows ageing consistent with a 1982 instrument. In some areas on the back, front and edge, that have been more exposed to contact with the player’s body, there are slight surface irregularities, minor cracking/flaking, and a few very small areas where the finish has worn away.
Overall, the finish appears uniform. Examination under a Wood’s/UV lamp also shows a substantially consistent response across the body, with only slight and normal differences in the areas that remained protected for decades under the pickguard and bridge.
The appearance and ageing pattern of the finish are compatible with a lacquer finish, but the exact chemical composition has not been laboratory tested and is therefore not stated as certain.
Period Fender Japan catalogs list the PB62 body as solid alder. This particular example has a very pronounced and attractive grain pattern. No obvious seams between separate body pieces are visible: it may be made from several carefully selected and very well-matched pieces, or possibly from a single piece. This cannot be determined with certainty from external visual inspection alone.
At the bottom of the neck pocket there is a permanently glued wooden insert/shim, probably maple, several millimeters thick, covering the full surface. It was most likely added at a later date to raise the neck and improve the overall neck-to-bridge geometry, helping to achieve a better setup. Since this insert covers the original bottom surface of the neck pocket, any factory stamps or markings underneath are currently not visible.
There are no markings that make it possible to determine with certainty whether the pickup was made in the USA or Japan, so no definitive claim is made regarding its exact origin.
The electronics have undergone some work over the years. The current potentiometers are replacement CTS pots dated 1974 and 1986. Some solder joints have also been redone. Part of the wiring, including a PVC-covered cable marked “Made in USA”, also appears to have been replaced. The capacitor appears to be presumably original. The output jack is marked “Japan” and appears consistent with an original or period-correct component. The Volume and Tone knobs are presumably not original.
The tuners, bridge and vintage-style saddles appear to be original.

GENERAL CONDITION :
This is an original vintage instrument from 1982, now more than forty years old.
It shows normal signs of age and use, including scratches, small dents, finish wear, light oxidation and other cosmetic imperfections consistent with its age.
The bass should therefore not be considered a completely untouched or “collector-grade” example.
The following interventions have been identified during its lifetime:
- removal/abrasion of the “Made in Japan” marking on the headstock;
- permanently glued wooden insert in the neck pocket;
- small local finish touch-up in the neck pocket area;
- replacement of the potentiometers with vintage CTS units;
- some reworked solder joints;
- replacement of part of the wiring;
- Volume and Tone knobs presumably not original.
At the same time, the instrument’s main structural components — neck, body, bridge, tuners and pickup — appear consistent with an early-production 1982 Fender Japan JV Precision Bass.
