In 1964, The Beatles needed more volume. As their shows grew louder and audiences became impossible to compete with, amplifiers like the AC-30 simply weren’t enough. Jennings Musical Instruments responded by developing the AC-50, a more powerful amplifier designed to deliver greater headroom and stage presence, allowing the band to overcome the noise of their screaming fans…we all know what that’s like.

Early production AC-50s, like this example, were built during that first year and feature two EL34 power tubes, producing a firmer low end and noticeably more output than earlier VOX designs. It marked a shift for VOX, moving toward higher powered amplification while still retaining the character the brand was known for.

Tonally the AC-50 sits in a different space to the AC-30. The Normal channel offers a fuller, higher headroom response, while the Brilliant channel brings a more forward, treble focused voice reminiscent of the Top Boost sound. Together they make for a versatile amplifier that can cover a wide range of applications while still retaining the unmistakable VOX character.

This 1964 VOX AC-50 head (serial number 05829) presents in great condition and is paired with a VOX V4083 cabinet (serial number 1107973). Introduced in the late 1960s, the V4083 features a 2 × 10 speaker configuration in a closed back design, offering a tighter low end and a more focused projection. The pairing works well together, delivering a punchy and controlled response while still carrying the character expected from a vintage VOX setup.

Overall, it stands as a strong and practical vintage amplifier rig with plenty of usable power and presence.
