About this listing
Fender Japan TN70-75 Telecaster Thinline A Serial 1986A Fender Japan recreation of the classic 1970s Telecaster Thinline!Produced in the mid-1980s during the Fujigen manufacturing era, the TN70-75 recreates the early Telecaster Thinline models from 1968 to 1971. These original models featured Fender's first use of mahogany, with a hollow body and distinctive F-holes. The TN70-75 follows this design with a maple neck and a separate maple fingerboard, retaining the characteristic features of the CBS-era Fender instruments. This example has an A serial number and dates to around 1985–1986. The TN'70-75 is also listed in Fender Japan's 1986 catalog. The combination of the warm, soft response of the mahogany hollow body and the bright, clear attack of the maple fingerboard is one of this model's defining qualities. The body retains a solid center section, with hollow chambers on either side, including the F-hole and control areas. There are similarities to Gibson's rival semi-hollow model, the ES-335, but the bolt-on neck and separate maple fingerboard preserve the unmistakable Fender character. That's what makes this guitar so interesting. It may look like a traditional Telecaster, but this Thinline is something quite different!【SOUND】It has the crisp attack and definition you expect from a Telecaster, combined with the rich midrange and softer resonance of a hollow body rather than a solid body. In many ways, it's an ideal combination, and the mahogany hollow-body construction plays a major role in shaping its distinctive character. On clean settings, notes remain well defined when playing chords, with the clarity of the single-coil pickups complemented by the airy resonance of the hollow body. The result is particularly appealing. The middle position delivers a pleasantly compressed feel for rhythm playing and responds beautifully to strumming and intricate picking. The neck pickup is naturally wonderful for arpeggios, too (as you'd expect!). Roll back the tone control and you get a warm, rounded sound that feels great under the fingers.Another detail worth noting is the upgrade to a vintage-style Mallory Mustard Tone Capacitor, adding to the character of this instrument. With overdrive, the unmistakable Telecaster character comes through loud and clear. The bridge pickup delivers exactly the kind of driven bite you would hope for.On the neck pickup or in the standard middle position, crunchy rhythm tones bring out a genuine 1970s vibe. Even with heavier distortion, the guitar retains its attack and presence. It's a reminder of why the electric guitar design pioneered by Fender remains so compelling.Another standout feature is the 4-way selector switch. Between the neck and bridge pickup positions, this modification adds both the standard mixed-pickup position and a series-wired humbucking position.Unlike the standard parallel combination, the series position adds thickness, output, and a stronger, more forward sound. It works particularly well with overdrive and distortion, expanding the guitar's range from rhythm work to lead playing. With the series position placed immediately next to the bridge pickup position, switching between a cutting Telecaster tone and a thicker, more powerful sound is especially convenient. The 1970s styling and the sound of the mahogany hollow body bring Curtis Mayfield to mind. With vintage Telecaster character and the added versatility of the 4-way modification, this is a remarkably well-rounded instrument.【SPECIFICATIONS】Body: Mahogany (Semi-Hollow Construction)Neck: Maple (C Shape)Fingerboard: MaplePickups: Telecaster Single-Coil Pickups × 2Controls: Master Volume, Master TonePickup Switching: 4-Way Selector SwitchTone Capacitor: Mallory Mustard Film CapacitorBridge: Vintage-Style Telecaster BridgeTuners: Vintage-Style TunersSerial Number: A Serial (circa 1985–1986)Modifications: 4-Way Selector Switch*4-Way Switching Configuration*・Position 1: Neck Pickup・Position 2: Neck + Bridge Pickups (Parallel)・Position 3: Neck + Bridge Pickups (Series / Humbucking)・Position 4: Bridge Pickup【CONDITION: S Excellent】There are a few minor signs of use and age, but overall, this guitar is in remarkable condition for an instrument over 40 years old.The pickguard has been replaced with an inch-spec version.
