The Tandberg TCD 3014 belongs to that very small circle of "no compromise" cassette decks considered among the finest ever built, of any brand. Designed in Norway to go head-to-head with the Nakamichi Dragon — and to surpass it according to many audiophiles — this machine is the product of a distinctly Scandinavian engineering obsession: everything is oversized, discrete and calibratable.
Where most decks make do with a single motor and a noisy solenoid, the 3014 packs a 3-head, 4-motor transport: a servo-controlled dual capstan, a forward motor, a rewind motor, and a fourth motor dedicated to moving the head assembly — eliminating any noisy solenoid mechanism. The 3-head system enables real-time off-tape monitoring.
The sound is simply stunning: huge dynamics, silky highs and bass with an authority that seems impossible to pull off a little strip of tape. Tandberg pushed signal purity so far as to use discrete transistors, few integrated circuits, and polyester and polypropylene capacitors. The proprietary Dyneq (dynamic record equalization) and Actilinear circuits push the tape medium to its limits. Manual bias, sensitivity and azimuth adjustments allow each cassette to be optimized to perfection.
Excellent condition, works perfectly. Please note: this is a 120V unit — a 120V step-down transformer is required for use in Europe.
