Ultra-Rare 8-Channel Mastering-Grade AD Converter

Description

If you're here, you probably already know exactly what this is—maybe the best multi-channel A/D converter ever made? This MADC-8 is the rare 8-channel powerhouse sibling to Fred's classic MADC-2. It features his final revision architecture, which completely ironed out the slight low-mid bump present in the earliest designs. Fred has since retired, meaning there won't be any future versions, and his gear has become incredibly difficult to track down. It's widely considered by high-end mastering and tracking engineers to be the most "natural" sounding AD out there.

It's in flawless working order and has been rarely used in a clean, smoke-free studio environment. The cosmetic condition is excellent, showing just a few very small, almost invisible marks from light use.

Tech Specs

  • Pure Class A JFET Circuitry: Completely discrete analogue signal path with zero IC op-amps used in the signal path. The transparency, depth, and imaging are unreal.
  • Analogue Inputs: 8 pristine analogue channels via high-quality front/rear XLR connectors, plus a standard DB-25 analogue input connector (wired to the Tascam/Avid/Digidesign standard).
  • Digital Outputs: 4 AES3 (XLR) digital outputs handling all 8 channels, plus a fixed 24-bit Word Clock output (BNC) and SPDIF (RCA). This specific unit has the optional second Word Clock output installed.
  • Front Panel Controls: Single front-panel switch to instantly shift sample rates from 44.1k up to 192k Fs with clear LED indicators.
  • Latching Clip LED: A single smart front-panel LED shows digital clipping and latches on until you physically press the "reset" switch, so you never miss an overage. It also features front-panel "Error" and "Lock" LEDs for real-time status updates on the digital streams.

Note on Calibration

This unit is currently set for a custom calibration of 0VU = -20dbfs. Per Fred Forssell: "I will change the –20 dBfs jumper resistors on the circuit board to actually be for 0 VU instead of 0 dBu. The rest of the jumpers will be as marked on the circuit board… referenced to 0 dBu." If you need a different calibration, you can easily open the top chassis cover and move the jumpers to whatever reference level you want; everything inside is clearly labeled.

Note on Voltage & Global Power

It's currently set for 220V/230V mains power. However, you can effortlessly open the chassis cover and change the internal AC voltage switch to 110V/115V should you ever need to do so. You just need to flip the internal switch and swap the rear fuse to match the target voltage—no external step-down converter required.

Price & Offers

Regarding the price: because these 8-channel mastering units are incredibly rare, it is almost impossible to find recent used sales data online. The 2-channel versions regularly sell for top dollar, but this is the full 8-channel powerhouse that originally cost closer to £4,000+ ($5,600+) new. I am listing it here at a fair price to see what the market says. I am looking to fund a new equipment purchase, so sensible offers are very welcome. Try me!

Looking for the complete 8-channel mastering chain?

I am simultaneously listing the matching Forssell MDAC-8 (8-Channel D/A Converter) in identical excellent condition. If you want the ultimate, uncompromised discrete Class A round-trip setup for your studio, I am highly incentivised to sell them as a pair. Drop me a message before purchasing and we can work out a great package deal for both units shipped together.
