The Reverend Charger is among the most recognisable guitars in Reverend’s range, beloved by players who want a simple guitar evocative of the earliest mid-century bolt-on’s. Part of Reverend’s appeal is a commitment to continuous development of their range, and this latest Charger JR is no exception. The familiar body has been ever-so-slightly slimmed down for increased comfort and lighter weight, while a new solid aluminum string block provides a stable and solid anchor for the strings, improving sustain, clarity, and tuning stability. The Roasted Maple neck is as good as ever, while a new “Charger” logo sits proud on the headstock.
Reverend have thoroughly overhauled their in-house P90, one of which sits pride of place in the bridge position on the Charger JR. The brand new Steelhead P90 has been designed from the ground up by Reverend design guru, Joe Naylor. This pickup features oversize steel poles, which boost upper frequency response and headroom, for enhanced harmonics and responsive pick attack. Sidewinder coil construction features two matched coils which cancel the annoying hum common with traditional designs. The coils are turned sideways, allowing both magnets to be focused on a single row of steel poles, yielding the single-coil snap and punch you expect from a P90.
The 3-way voicing switch alters the pickup’s response. Bright firms up the low end and adds bite to the attack, normal delivers a well-balanced tone, and smooth rolls off the highs for fuller, thicker lines. It’s a straightforward way to tailor the guitar to different amps, pedals, or gain settings on the fly.
As with all Reverend guitars, the Charger JR is built with premium components throughout, including those you can’t see. It uses more consistent ±10% tolerance pots and capacitors (rather than the ±20% parts found on most guitars), and a Pure Tone output jack with dual contacts for a firmer connection, better signal transfer, and improved reliability. A treble bleed circuit maintains clarity when rolling back the volume, while the boneite nut minimises friction, helping the strings glide smoothly through the nut slots for enhanced tuning stability.
