A Parlor Guitar That's Ready Whenever You Are
Parlor guitars have a way of ending up in your hands more than any other guitar you own. They're the right size to grab off the couch, easy to bring to a friend's place, and small enough that playing them just feels natural. The Ibanez PN12MHE in Open Pore Natural is exactly that kind of guitar — a compact, approachable acoustic-electric that doesn't demand anything from you except that you play it.
Built on Ibanez's PF Performance Series platform, the PN12MHE pairs an all-okoume body with a light open pore polyurethane finish that lets the wood breathe and resonate more freely than a thick lacquer coat would allow. The result is a warm, woody tone that punches above the guitar's modest price point — and sounds especially satisfying when you're fingerpicking in a quiet room or strumming through a small amp.
The built-in electronics mean you're never stuck unplugged when an opportunity to play out arises. Whether you're sitting in at an open mic or just noodling through a practice amp, the PN12MHE has you covered without any extra gear required.
All-Okoume Body With Open Pore Finish
The PN12MHE features a parlor body with okoume top, back, and sides. Okoume is a lightweight African wood with a tonality that sits somewhere between mahogany and cedar — warm and midrange-forward, with a softness that works particularly well for fingerstyle playing and lighter strumming. It's a wood that tends to favor players who want presence without harshness.
The open pore polyurethane finish skips the heavy lacquer layer, leaving the wood surface mostly unobstructed. This lets the body panels vibrate more naturally, which players often notice as a slightly more open, resonant sound compared to high-gloss instruments at a similar price. It also gives the guitar a tactile, matte texture that looks and feels distinctive.
Neck, Fretboard, and Playability
The neck is built from nyatoh — a stable, medium-density hardwood that Ibanez uses across several of their acoustic lines. It joins the body at the 12th fret, which is traditional parlor construction and helps balance the guitar's feel when sitting. The laurel fretboard carries 18 frets with white dot inlays, and the scale length comes in at 24.8" (628.7mm) — just a touch shorter than a standard dreadnought, which keeps string tension comfortable without dramatically changing the feel.
The nut width measures 42mm, which is on the narrower side for a 6-string acoustic. Players who find standard acoustic necks a little wide will likely appreciate the tighter spacing here. The neck profile is Ibanez's PN shape — relatively slim and easy to wrap a hand around for longer playing sessions.
Ibanez AEQ-2T Electronics
The PN12MHE is equipped with an Ibanez undersaddle pickup feeding into the AEQ-2T preamp system, mounted on the upper bout. The preamp gives you independent bass and treble controls plus volume, and the built-in tuner is chromatic and operates even when the guitar is unplugged — a genuinely useful feature when you're getting ready backstage or in a loud rehearsal room. Output is through a standard 1/4" jack, powered by a single 9V battery.
The Ibanez Advantage bridge pins are a small but practical detail: their bulb-shaped design makes them much easier to pull out and reseat than traditional straight pins, which makes string changes quicker and less of a production.
