Untouched electronics. Has the C945 transistor, and NEC UPC324C bipolar analog integrated circuit
Handwired (of course). This unit a very rare vintage analog drum synthesizer / effect unit from Japan, circa early 1980s.
Internally it uses one VCO (voltage-controlled oscillator) plus a noise generator (white or pink noise) which can be mixed via a “balance” control to blend between oscillator tone and noise.
On trigger, it will produce a synthetic percussion sound (oscillator + noise) whose character you can shape with knobs.
It’s a fusion of oscillator + noise + envelope + LFO and offers distinctive percussive synthesis possibilities typical of 1980s experimental gear.
This is the original effect which has been copied a lot. e.g. Synthrotek’s DS-8 clone, Coron DrumSynth8 Clone by EuroRack, etc...
