A comprehensive analysis of Gibson J-45s from the 1940s to 1960s. A true dissection of the J-45!

Gibson / 1964 J-45

"The J-45 Gets New Specification Changes"

Since its introduction in 1942, the J-45 has undergone numerous specification changes, offering a wide range of expressive features and tones.
1964 also saw further changes to the body's appearance.

- Year the thick pickguard was changed

The top is made of spruce and finished in a cherry sunburst color.
It will develop a pale orange color over time, creating a soft impression.
This cherry color was first produced in 1962 and continued until 1967.

The back and sides are made of mahogany and finished in a vibrant cherry color.
You can feel the powerful grain that is unique to mahogany.

The fingerboard is made of densely grained rosewood.
The white celluloid dot position marks stand out.
The nut width is approximately 42mm.

The neck is made of mahogany, and from the 1960s onwards, the neck grip was changed to a slimmer shape.
If you don't like the thick grips of the 1950s, we recommend models from 1963 onwards.

The upper belly bridge is made of rosewood and features an adjustable matte ceramic bridge.
The matte finish of the ceramic saddles was a specification change that began around 1963.
Also, while plastic bridges were also available from 1963 to 1964, this instrument features a wooden bridge.

In 1955, the small pickguard was replaced by a large pickguard, and this year, further changes were made.
Until 1963, a large pickguard approximately 0.5mm thick was used, but from 1964, it was changed to a pickguard approximately 1.0mm thick.
The pickguard is a transparent pickguard with a red marbled pattern.

The headstock features a Gibson silkscreen logo.
The headstock angle is 17 degrees.

The tuning machines are equipped with KLUSON DELUXE triple tuning machines.

The soundhole rosette was changed to a double-ring design in 1963.
Prior to 1963, it had a single ring.
Even minor changes can be important in determining the era.

This unit has no history of cracking and features a beautifully faded cherry finish.
It's rare to come across one in such beautiful condition.
This is a rare example from the first year when the specifications were changed to a thick pickguard, so if you've been looking for one, be sure to check it out.
